Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is an alternative approach to healing that complements, and does not substitute for, care provided by health professionals.  Yoga therapy is appropriate for clients with either injuries or chronic conditions who seek to supplement traditional health care.  Therapeutic sessions can be offered in private sessions or in group classes for students with common health concerns.

A private therapeutic session begins with a thorough assessment of health history, lifestyle factors, posture, movement and gait, and health-related concerns and goals for improved health and well-being.  Following the assessment, a personalized treatment plan is developed.  Private sessions and group classes don't necessarily follow the format of a typical yoga class.  Therapeutic work generally includes yoga poses (asanas) and movement specially designed to address the physical needs of the body.  Props are used to support physical movement and body work and may include a variety of balls, massage peanuts, blocks, yoga straps, blankets, wooden poles, and chairs.

In addition to meeting the physical needs of the body, yogic breathing techniques and meditation may also be incorporated into the treatment plan.  Yoga therapy aims to address health from a holistic perspective — physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.  The ultimate goal is to help each client achieve optimal health and well-being for more joyful living.
